A complete guide to hotel conversations, from check-in to check-out.
Check-in process:
- Arrive at the front desk → give your name / show your passport → confirm your reservation → pay the accommodation tax → receive your room key → head to your room.
About the accommodation tax:
- The accommodation tax (shukuhakuzei) is levied separately by each prefecture, and the amount varies by area and room rate.
- It's usually paid separately in cash at check-in or check-out — it's not included in your reservation total.
- Tokyo: 100-200 yen per night for rooms 10,000 yen and above; Osaka: starting from 100 yen per person per night.
Note:
- Check-in is usually 15:00-16:00, and check-out is usually 11:00.
- If you arrive early, you can drop off your luggage first — early check-in may be possible if a room is available (confirm with the hotel).
- Most Japanese hotels offer free luggage storage until closing time that day.
At check-out:
- Returning your room key/card is a required step at check-out
- "Could you tell me the breakdown?" isn't mandatory — only use it if you have questions about the additional charges
