How to use an ATM:
- Go to a bank or convenience store ATM → insert your card, tap your IC card (ICOCA/Suica), or use mobile payment like PayPay → select your language/service → enter your PIN and amount → collect your cash/receipt.
Opening a bank account:
- Opening an account usually requires your residence card, a personal seal (some banks accept a signature), and proof of your Japanese address — some banks also require that you've held your visa status for at least 3 months.
- Some banks offer simplified account opening and multilingual support for foreign residents — worth checking online in advance.
Note:
- Convenience store ATMs often charge a fee for other-bank transactions or use at night/on holidays.
- Many small restaurants and shops in Japan are still cash-based.
