How to order:
  • Many restaurants have a ticket vending machine at the entrance — buy your ticket before you sit down.
  • If you can't read the menu, just point at someone else's dish and say "Kore to onaji mono o onegaishimasu" (the same as this, please).
Paying the bill:
  • At most restaurants, you pay at the register on your way out — not at the table.
  • Some small shops only accept cash. If unsure, ask "Kaado tsukaemasu ka?" (Can I use a card?) first.
Note:
  • Most restaurants in Japan don't offer free refills — water is usually free, but you often need to ask for it.
  • Many places don't allow outside food, and won't let you bring your own drinks either.
