Wi-Fi, QR codes, apps — successfully completing phone and internet tasks.
SIM cards & connectivity:
- Prepaid SIM cards are available at electronics stores, airports, and convenience stores — short-term tourist SIMs don't require a residence card
- For long-term stays, a regular phone contract is recommended, which requires a residence card and bank account
QR code payments:
- Japanese QR payments come in two types: scanning the store's code, or having your code scanned. Apps like PayPay/LINE Pay usually require linking a Japan-issued bank card or credit card.
- Some apps only accept cards issued in Japan — if your overseas credit card won't link, try paying with cash or a different app.
Apps & verification codes:
- Many Japanese apps use SMS verification during sign-up, which requires a Japanese phone number to receive.
- If the code doesn't arrive after a while, first check that your phone number format is correct (usually starts with +81, dropping the leading 0).
- For internet setup or connection issues, try restarting your router first — if the problem continues, contact your provider's support.
